For my major project in my third year, I had the idea to create buildings inspired by fairytales/nursery rhymes. To make the idea more out there and memorable, I decided to put an adult/twisted theme onto the buildings. I had lots of ideas but due to time management and budget I was only able to make three. I chose:
– The Little Mermaid’s Butchers and Fishmongers (based around that Ariel is half human half fish).
– Humps Brothel (a Humpty Dumpty play on words, if you scroll down there’s an Illustrator file of the design of the front of the building where I’ve designed it to look like an egg in shorts, stockings, and boots).
– Jacks Coffee Shop (based around Amsterdam Coffee shops – cannabis stores – where I have done things like put pills and cannabis leaves within the vines)
Here is a pencil design of a row of shops. This is concept art for my major project. I am practicing drawing British Victorian shop frontages. The design is my own.
Here is the painted version of my previous drawing – shop frontages. I tried using watercolours as it’s a material that i’m not used to. It gives a nice feel to the brickwork.
This is my own design. For my major project I have an idea to take nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters and stories, and put a dark adult twist on them. As I make sets and props, I am going to turn these visions into building frontages of shops/bars. Here are all the designs that I have come up with for the buildings without colour.
Here are 2 out of 14 mock up buildings for my major project (approx 10x10cm). They are made out of white card and I have drawn the designs directly onto the card with pencil.
In the midst of creating the sets for my major project. By using the laser cutter, I have created ‘flexible wood’ out of MDF which I am going to shape and use for one of the roofs.
WIP shots of my little mermaid set I’m creating for my final project. It went from a drawing, to being edited on photoshop, edited on illustrator, laser cut, and then painted and pieced together. It is entirely made from MDF, even the bendy roof! Design and idea are my own.
For my major project one of my buildings is Humpty Dumpty’s Brothel. This is the front of the building drawn up on Adobe Illustrator ready to be cut and engraved on the laser cutter. Design and idea are my own. ‘Humps’ is going to be LED neon lighting, the “stockings” are windows, and the doorway is going to have a black curtain.
Creating windows for one of my sets. Create a pattern on Adobe Illustrator, laser cut onto black and clear perspex, and then press them into each other.
These are the stained glass windows I have made for two of the buildings I am creating. The technique is to laser cut black and clear perspex and insert them into each other. I tried using coloured filters but they were proving difficult to stick and didn’t look that good. After experimenting with different ways to get the colours, I found out that sharpies were the best option.
Here is miniature meat that I sculpt from SuperSculpey Flesh. I then baked and painted with acrylic.
This is my ‘The Little Mermaid: Fishmongers and Butchers’ stall that I made for my final project of university. The theme is to turn nursery rhymes/fairytales into adult themed buildings. I have chosen a Fishmongers and Butchers for this fairytale as Ariel (The Little Mermaid) is half human/half fish. It is made entirely from MDF (even the roof), and then I used fabric to create the table cloth.
This is my ‘Jacks Coffee Shop’ building for my final project at university. My theme is turning nursery rhymes/fairytales into adult themed buildings. This building is based on Jack and the Beanstalk. It’s also based on Amsterdam Coffee Shops (drug stores) – the greenery on the outside represents the “cannabis” and “beanstalk”, and the “pills” on the outside represents the “beans” in the story. It is made out of MDF. I have created my own lighting – the inside lighting. I also created the stained glass windows, “pills”, and greenery from scratch. The greenery was created by rolling two different tones of green liquid latex very thinly, and then twisting them into each other.
This is my ‘Humps Brothel’ building for my final project at university. My theme is turning nursery rhymes/fairytales into adult themed buildings. This building is based on Humpty Dumpty. It is made out of MDF. I have created my own lighting – the LED sign and inside lighting. I also created the stained glass windows from scratch.
